According to reports by the Iranian news agencies, there has been a fire at a refinery in Tehran. The refinery is located in Tehran’s Shar-e Rey, south of the capital and the unit that caught fire was under reconstruction.

Officials said that there was a oil leak in the unit that was undergoing repairs. The incident happened around 4:00 pm local time.

Governor of Rey district Hedayatollah Jamalipour told a local TV station that
“Six workers were killed and two were injured. The fire is under control now and other units in the refinery were not affected.”

Earlier this year, there was another fire at Tehran refinery, which took 120 firefighters four hours to extinguish. There were no injuries in that incident.

In 2016, there were around thirty incidents in the Iranian oil industry and several people were killed and injured.

Iran produces about 64 million liters of petroleum daily and imports 12 million liters to meet domestic demand.

The 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, including the United States, has helped necessary equipment to be imported into Iran for its oil infrastructure.
