Asma Jahangir, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran told The Third Committee of the UN, that while Iran was responding to communication from her office, she was deeply concerned about continuation of several systemic violations of human rights in the country.

Jahangir, who has prepared a six-month report on the Islamic Republic’s human rights record, said that she continues to receive reports of violations of freedom of speech, arbitrary detention of dual nationals and rights violation of religious and ethnic minorities.

She also voiced concern about persecution of human rights activists, executions, including death sentence for minors and torture in detention.

Iran’s representative responded that his country is the target of a “political charade” and said that there is no ground to produce periodical reports on the situation of human rights in Iran.

The General Assembly allocates to the Third Committee agenda items relating to a range of social, humanitarian affairs and human rights issues that affect people all over the world.

The Thrid Committee was scheduled to vote on a resolution on human rights in Iran, but a shouting match between the Saudi and Syrian delegates interrupted the session.

It is anticipated that the committee will resume its work on October 26 and will vote on the resolution.
