U.S. President Donald Trump and first lady Melania have arrived at the Hotel des Invalides in Paris, where they were greeted by French President Emmanuel Macron and wife Brigitte in front of the historic building.

The presidents on July 13 stood side-by-side in front of an honor guard as the national anthems of the two nations were played.

The two will tour sites in Paris the rest of the day and then participate in Bastille Day celebrations in the capital on July 14.

Trump will also hold talks later on July 13 with Macron that are expected to focus on the conflict in Syria and global counterterrorism efforts.

There will be a joint press conference at 6:25 p.m. local time (1625 GMT/UTC).

Macron invited Trump to mark Bastille Day in Paris during a telephone conversation last month. In addition to being the French national holiday, this year the commemorations will also mark the 100th anniversary of the U.S. entry into World War I.

According to a recent study by the Pew Research Center, only 14 percent of French citizens have confidence in Trump's ability "to do the right thing in world affairs."

The French trip comes less than a week after Trump returned from the Group of 20 summit in Hamburg, Germany.
