Trump Chief Strategist Bannon Leaves White House

U.S. President Donald Trump's controversial senior strategist, Steve Bannon, is leaving his position, the White House announced on August 18.

"White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and Steve Bannon have mutually agreed today would be Steve's last day," White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said in a statement.

"We are grateful for his service and wish him the best," she said.

Bannon, the former chief of the right-wing Breitbart News outlet, was a key adviser to Trump during his election campaign and during his first seven months in the White House.

U.S. media reported that Trump was angry about an interview Bannon gave this week to a liberal publication in which he contradicted the president's aggressive position on North Korea.

When asked on August 15 about Bannon's job security in the administration, Trump said only that "we'll see."
