Members of the Taliban political office in Doha have held discussions with Iran’s foreign ministry and high-level officials in Tehran, Tasnim news agency close to the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) reported on Tuesday.
Based on this report, the Taliban delegation after visiting Moscow last week travelled to Tehran. Tasnim does not mention which Iranian officials the visiting delegation has met.
The Taliban visits to Moscow and Tehran take place after months of negotiations with the United States resulting in a draft agreement that envisaged a gradual U.S. troop withdrawal and a Taliban commitment to hold talks with the current Afghan government and other political forces in the country.
However, the imminent announcement of a peace agreement was cancelled on September 8 when U.S. President Donald Trump called off a meeting and further talks with the Taliban following fresh bombing attacks by the insurgent group on civilian targets.
Tasnim says during talks with Iranian officials the Taliban have discussed negotiations with the U.S. and inter-Afghan dialogue. The report adds that the Taliban have decided to continue diplomatic efforts for peace despite the cancellation of talks with the U.S.
