U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has hailed "productive" discussions with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang.

Denuclearization and a potential second summit between Kim and President Donald Trump were expected to be high on the agenda of the October 7 meeting.

"Had a good trip to Pyongyang to meet with Chairman Kim," Pompeo tweeted. "We continue to make progress on agreements made at Singapore Summit. Thanks for hosting me and my team."

"It's a very nice day that promises a good future for both countries," Kim told the U.S. official as they sat down for lunch following the talks.

At a meeting later in the day with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in Seoul, Pompeo said he had "a good productive conversation" with Kim.

Trump met Kim in Singapore in June for an historic summit. The leaders hailed major agreements toward denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, but little progress, if any, has been made since.

Pompeo traveled to Pyongyang from Tokyo early on October 7. The secretary of state will also visit China, North Korea's main ally, on this trip.
