The spokesman of Iran’s interior ministry has finally announced the confirmation of Tehran mayor’s appointment in a tweet,

The Tehran City Council elected Pirouz Hanachi as new mayor more than two weeks ago, but his confirmation dragged on, apparently as the interior ministry was waiting for approval from the intelligence ministry.

Earlier reports had said that the Intelligence Ministry was refusing to issue security clearance for Tehran's new mayor Pirouz Hanachi because of his brother's membership thirty years ago in the Islamic Republic's major opposition group Mojahedin-e Khalq, also known as MeK.

In the past two weeks neither the interior ministry nor the intelligence ministry offered any explanations about the status of Hanachi’s confirmation.

The approval of his appointment came a day after a member of parliament said the legislature will pursue the case.

The spokesman said in his tweet that as soon the interior ministry today received the approval from the intelligence ministry, it issues the confirmation.
