Rouhani And Erdogan Discuss Rohingya Crisis

Kazakhstan-Iranian president Hassan Rouhani meets Erdogan, Turkey's president.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Iranian counterpart, Hassan Rouhani have reportedly discussed the condition of displaced Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

The two met on the sidelines of the First Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Summit on Science and Technology, in Astana, the capital city of Kazakhstan, on Saturday, September 9.

Furthermore, Rouhani said, “Israel’s atrocities against Palestinians and Myanmar’s crackdown on the Rohingya community are among major challenges that make Muslim solidarity a necessity”.

He also affirmed that Muslims should make a collective effort to build a world free of war and violence.

Earlier in a tweet, deputy Chief of Staff of the President for Political Affairs, Hamid Aboutalebi, had described the meeting between Erdogan and Rouhani, as an “Effort to unify the Islamic world in support of Muslims and preventing brutal genocide in Myanmar and coordination for tomorrow’s summit”

While Rouhani and Erdogan discussed the condition of Muslims in Myanmar, the outspoken Iranian MP, Ali Motahari had earlier criticized Rouhani’s government, saying, “Regarding Rohingya Muslims, Turkey has had a better performance than the Islamic Republic of Iran”.

Ali Motahari had also maintained, “Our expectation from the Islamic Iran was much higher than what we have seen. Sadly, we care more for Shi’ism than for Islam, whereas Islam is comprised of Shi’a and Sunnis”.
