Iranian state TV reported on Wednesday June 12 that the burning of an overheated power generator has caused a fire at one of the platforms of Southern Pars gas field in the Persian Gulf.

According to state TV (IRIB) the platform is located 92 kilometers off the Iranian coast in Assalouyeh at the border with Qatar in the Gulf.

Firefighters have dealt with the incident on platform number 9, and the fire has left no casualty, said the report.

Meanwhile, Fars news agency quoted the manager of Pars gas field as having said that 14 technicians working on the platform have been evacuated. He said that 90 percent of the fire has been extinguished and firefighters are still working on the platform.

Officials say gas production in the area continues in spite of the incident.

Southern Pars gas field produces two third of Iran's natural gas output.

The fire at the Southern Pars Gas platform is the latest one of a series of fires in Iran during recent weeks which include an incident at the holy Shi'ite shrine in Qom.
