An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 shook the border area between Iran and Iraq early on August 26, with Iranian media reporting that at least one person was killed and about 100 others were injured.
Iran’s Tasnim news agency said most of the casualties were in the town of Tazehabad, northeast of Kermanshah.
People in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad reported feeling the effects of the quake, Iraqi television reported.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a magnitude 6.1 earthquake hit about 88 kilometers west-northwest of Kermanshah. At least two aftershocks measuring above 3.0 on the Richter scale were also reported in the area.
Iran is prone to regular earthquakes as it sits on major fault lines.
Last November, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit villages and towns in western Kermanshah Province along the mountainous border with Iraq, killing at least 620 people and injuring thousands of others.
