A lawsuit has been filed against the brother of Iran’s former president Mohammad Khatami, Tehran's "Revolution and Public Prosecutor-General, Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi disclosed on Tuesday, December 18.

Mohammad Reza Khatami is charged with questioning the credibility of the controversial election in 2009 that officially led to the reelection of the conservative incumbent, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Jafari Dolatabadi reiterated.

In a video released in November, the younger brother of pro-reform former president Khatami (1997-2005) challenged the credibility of the highly controversial 2009 presidential election and once again insisted that the incumbent, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was declared the winner in a fraudulent procedure.

Dismissing the official statistics that 39 million participated in the 2009 election, Khatami cited "informed individuals" as saying that eight million fake votes were added at the national election headquarters in favor of Ahmadinejad.

Former twice speaker of Majils, Mehdi Karroubi, as well as former Prime Minister Mir Hossein Mousavi who challenged Ahmadinejad in 2009 election, protested the official result that led to months of anti-Islamic establishment demonstrations across Iran.

Later, the two, along with Mousavi's wife, Zahra Rahnavard, were detained and since 2011 are placed under house arrest.

Mohammadreza Khatami who is married to Zahra Eshraqi, the granddaughter of the founder the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, was given a one-year jail term and banned from all political and media activity for two years. Six other reformists were also sentenced in October 2017 charged with "propaganda against the ruling Islamic establishment".
