The top adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Akbar Velayati who was in Lebanon on November 3, insisted that the U.S. will fail in Syria.

During his meetings with Lebanese officials, including Hezabolah leader Hassan Nasralah he predicted that Syrian forces will soon retake more territory from the Islamic State

Iran has been the main backer of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his forces that are fighting a civil war since 2011. Velayati noted that "we will witness in the near future the advance of government and popular forces in Syria to the east of the Euphrates, and the liberation of Raqqa city."

Syrian government forces have received significant support from the Russian Air Force and Iran backed militias.Iran initially claimed that their forces are in Syria to defend holy Shiite shrines.

Velayati also accused the United States of trying to dismember Syria. According to Velayati "The Americans, by locating in eastern Iraq, are trying to divide Syrian in to two parts and as they didn't and won't succeed in Iraq, they won't ducceed in Syria."
