In a statement on the U.S. drone attack near Baghdad which killed the Commander of Iran's Qods Force Qassem Soleimani, Iran's Supreme National Security Council has said hard revenge against those who shed his blood will be taken "at the right time and place".

The statement called the attack "the biggest strategic mistake of the United States in Western Asia" and alleged that the killing was the revenge taken on the Iranian commander by ISIS, which the United States carried out.

"There is no doubt that this crime was Da'ish and Takfiri terrorists' revenge on the great commanders of the war on terrorism which America carried out," the statement said.

The statement called the killing of the commander of the Qods Force "murderous adventurism" and said the Supreme National Security Council holds the United States responsible for all of its consequences.

"The path of jihad and resistance will undoubtedly be followed with more motivation and the tree of resistance will grow larger and blossom more," the statement said.

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad-Javad Zarif said this morning that the Foreign Ministry will use its political, legal, and international capacities to implement decisions made by Iran's Supreme National Security Council "in order to hold the criminal and terrorist regime of the US accountable for this blatant crime".

Zarif had earlier said in a tweet that the U.S targeting and assassination of Soleimani who was the most effective force fighting ISIS, Al Nusrah, Al Qaida and other extremist groups was an act of international terrorism. "The US bears responsibility for all consequences of its rogue adventurism," the Iranian foreign minister said in his tweet.
