Hossein Dehghan, a military adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told Al Jazeera TV on Wednesday July 24 that “Any change in the situation in the Persian Gulf will lead to a dangerous confrontation.”
The warning was broadcast as part of an interview to be aired later.
Dehghan repeated Iranian official stance on negotiations with the United States, saying that “Iran will not negotiate with the United States under any circumstance.”
He threatened that if Washington decides to go to war with Iran, all U.S. bases in the region will come under fire by Iranian forces.
Tensions in the Persian Gulf region escalated to a highly complex level after Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, IRGC, seized a UK-flagged oil tanker following the detention of an Iranian oil tanker at Gibraltar on July 19 for violating EU sanctions against Syria.
Subsequently, UK has called for a coalition of European countries to guarantee the security of shipping in the Persian Gulf. Dehghan’s statement appears to be a response to the idea of forming a European coalition in the Persian Gulf region.
At the same time, the United States’ sanctions have nearly halted Iran’s oil exports and Washington is also planning to form a global coalition to monitor shipping in the region.
Dehghan said either all countries will be able to export their oil via the Persian Gulf or no country can do so.
Meanwhile, he accused the United Arab Emirates of providing a base for the United States to do harm to Iran’s national interests.
Dehghan also said that Arab states in the region have sent missions to Iran for peace talks.
While the Trump administration is looking for a new agreement with Iran that would cover Tehran’s ballistic missile program, Dehghan told Al Jazeera that Iran will not hold talks with anyone over its missile.
