Iran scored on an own goal by Morocco in added time to capture a 1-0 victory in the first full day of competition at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Iran was credited with the goal at five minutes into stoppage time when Morocco's Aziz Bouhaddouz headed in an own goal in the June 15 match in St. Petersburg.

It was the second-ever victory in World Cup competition for Iran, which beat the United States in a 1998 match.

The Iran-Morocco match followed a 1-0 victory by Uruguay over Egypt in Yekaterinburg.

Soccer powers Spain and Portugal were scheduled to play in the day's late match in Sochi.

Russia opened competition with a 5-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in Moscow on June 14 in a match between the two lowest-ranked FIFA teams in the tournament.
